since 1997 michael najjar has been intensely involved with photography and new media
art. his works explore the impact of digital technology on contemporary developments
and he evolves visions and utopias of future social structures in a constant state of
technological flux. he identifies the impact of such transformation as the loss of the unity
of space and time and a potent de-materialisation or flight from the body which in turn
give birth to a perfectly simulated parallel universe in which the contiguity of reality and
virtual worlds is presented as hyperreality. najjar’s photographic and video work takes the form of work groups informed by rich critical reflections on the media deployed. realistic elements couple with virtual worlds
and fictions. computer-supported simulations and hyperreal techniques fuse together in
a new form of artistic expression – hybrid photography which has also been labelled
post-photography. najjar is currently engaged on a work group exploring the future of the human body under the impact of gene manipulation, software implants and direct computer
networking. such developments could well be a watershed in the age-old cycle of birth
and death. najjar’s work has its vital roots in the ever-greater convergence and networking of
computers, telecommunications, visual worlds, and urban life environments which are all
opening up new, uncharted horizons. the interaction of media-driven visuals and text
content with the real experiential world, and the way they now shape and dominate it, has
wrought radical changes in our cultural constructs over the past decades. what vilém
flusser has termed the telematic society can be characterised by the strong influence it
exerts in terms of digital technology and digital data exchanges on the everyday life of
people. the relationship between real and virtual worlds in conjunction with the enduring
powerful magic inherent in the rapport between man and his (mirror) image are two of the
key components of this development.
on the international front michael najjar has been represented since 2003 by the new
york bitforms gallery which, under the directorship of steve sacks, is mainly specialised
in new media and software art. located in new york’s chelsea district, the bustling hub
of the international art scene, bitforms gave najjar his first solo show in new york with
his »netropolis« work group. other media artists ranking in the international avant-garde
represented by bitforms include such names as michael joaquin grey, lynn hershman,
golan levin, manfred mohr, mark napier, michael ress, daniel rozin, lincoln schatz,
and jeff talman. in fall 2005 bitforms opened a gallery in seoul, south korea.
in germany michael najjar has been represented since 1997 by lutz teutloff, the
experienced gallery owner and renowned art deal and collector. lutz teutloff has
devoted himself to contemporary art, and especially contemporary photography, since
1997. ever since its foundation the galerie teutloff has organised exhibitions with a host
of international artists in bielefeld, cologne, berlin and toronto. artists exhibited by
teutloff include irene andessner, herbert döring-spengler, volker hildebrandt, jürgen
klauke, fabrizio plessi and buky schwartz.
